RAW processing software packages are not identical. If you are a long time user of Photoshop CS6/ACR, you will immediately realize that this is an execrable choice that is going to train-wreck your workflow, and likely result in your not being able to fix some types of problems in some of your photos, at all. Abandon Photoshop CS6 and process your images with the manufacturer’s software that came with your camera (Like Canon’s Digital Photo Pro), or some other RAW processing software like Raw Therapee. What to do? There are really only three choices, all of them less than ideal.ġ. So if you have a new Canon camera made in 2021, that is only supported by the Camera RAW v13 module of Photoshop CC or Lightroom CC, but your home copy of Photoshop CS6 is running ACR 9.1.1, or an even older version like 8.3, you are hosed: your Photoshop/ACR will not open the CR3 Raw files from your camera. Instead of updating the Camera Raw plugin for each new generation of camera, Adobe updates it’s DNG Converter. Samsung and Sony support it in-camera, but without support from the “Big Guns” of the DSLR camera world (Canon and Nikon), DNG was more-or-less doomed to being a niche file format.

DNG, or Digital Negative, was intended to alleviate this problem, but it never caught on with either Canon, Nikon, or Pentax. And every time a manufacturer comes out with a new camera, the RAW file format is usually “tweaked” in some way, to accommodate the unique sensor data and meta data that camera outputs. The reason for DNG to exist in the first place, is that the RAW files that cameras shoot are all proprietary formats. If you haven’t heard of this, DNG is supposed to be a “universal” RAW format. In the interests of fairness, Adobe has provided a workaround for this issue: Adobe DNG Converter. But in the last couple of years, most of the sites that were hosting it seem to have disappeared, or are no longer hosting that particular version. Two years ago, it was still easy to find copies of ACR 9.1.1 on the ‘net, even though it was, by then, no longer on Adobe’s own website.

If you shoot Canon gear, the most recent camera bodies that are supported by ACR 9.1.1 are the Rebel T7i, the EOS M6, and the EOS 77D, which were released in February 2017, and which all have APS-C sensors. The last version of Camera RAW that will run on Photoshop CS6 is 9.1.1. So I guess I will be stuck with my aging copy of Photoshop CS6 for the rest of however long I am still doing photography.

I personally loathe this move by Adobe: professional photographers can pass the $50/month subscription fee along to their clients, but hobby photographers like me can’t, and $600/year for the subscription to Creative Cloud is simply unacceptable. As you probably know by now, Adobe has migrated it’s image processing software to an online subscription service, Adobe Creative Cloud, and they are no longer supporting standalone Photoshop CS6 or Lightroom with updates to the Camera RAW plugin.
